 Topic:  Tuberculosis:  Moving beyond 20th century science: New insights into its pathogenesis, immunity and susceptibility?

Robert Hunter, M.D., Ph.D., is Distinguished Chair in Molecular Pathology and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, USA.  Dr Hunter is also chief of service for pathology at both Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Harris Health System’s Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital. He received his medical degree and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, where he also completed postgraduate training in anatomic and clinical pathology. His clinical and research interests include immunopathology, vaccine adjuvants, infectious disease and the pathogenesis of tuberculosis. He has received several prestigious awards for his sustained and distinguished scholarly activities, and has published >234 papers in the peer reviewed international scientific journals.

Dr Hunter has proposed novel understanding of pathology and pathogenesis of post primary tuberculosis. This information can contribute towards development of novel strategies for protection and treatment of tuberculosis. He is collaborating with University of Bergen on a project on understanding the pathogenesis of tuberculosis by using Norwegian archival tissue material of the pre-antibiotic era.
