Calls in global health: AMR in a one Health Perspective and poverty-related diseases research in sub-Saharan Africa

Pre-project – Antimicrobial Resistance from a One Health Perspective

Funding from The research Council of Norway is available to establish collaboration between research groups and public/private sector actors with a view to applying for funding under a call for a Collaborative and Knowledge-building Project by the deadline in spring 2022.

The objective of the call is to support pre-projects for future Collaborative and Knowledge-building Projects that can help to resolve or tackle key societal challenges relating to antimicrobial resistance from a One Health perspective.

In the main call, NOK 15 million from the thematic area Global Health will be earmarked for «equal cooperation with low and lower-middle income countries», and NOK 10 million will be earmarked for cooperation with China and India. The requirement of including two Norwegian partners does not apply for projects funded by these thematic areas.

Poverty-related diseases research in sub-Saharan Africa

The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) has established itself as the focal point of cooperation in clinical research on infectious disease between the EU and sub-Saharan Africa. To continue these investments after the last calls of the EDCTP2 programme, there is a need to further support research on the major infectious disease threats facing sub-Saharan Africa. Despite large-scale investments in product development for poverty-related infectious diseases (PRDs), progress in achieving public health gain is slow, while sub-Saharan Africa bears the highest burden of these diseases. There is a need to support product development and to encourage the use of new, innovative approaches and emerging technologies in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve rapid progress and impact. The COVID-19 pandemic is generating novel knowledge that could also advance prevention, treatment or diagnosis of PRDs in this part of the world.
